Media Gym was founded by longtime colleagues and friends Karen Kunkel Young, Ben Epstein and Tom Langan.

The founders first met nearly 20 years ago, as producers at the BBC in New York. During a casual catch up one evening, the conversation turned to a discussion of transitions away from the entertainment industry towards new opportunities. As they talked, a shared observation emerged: people across various industries often struggled to tell their stories effectively. It became abundantly clear to Karen, Ben and Tom that storytelling skills are essential in today’s professional landscape and that their unique experiences in media meant they were perfectly positioned to help individuals develop those skills.

With a deep and abiding love for the storytelling process, and expertise honed by decades long careers producing hit TV shows for top media companies including Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, Disney and Paramount, they saw an opportunity to share these valuable skills with others. That’s when Media Gym was born—a venture dedicated to helping people tell their stories in a meaningful, impactful, and authentic way.

Our Story

Our Team

  • Ben Epstein

Ben has been a passionate storyteller since childhood, beginning at the age of six when he won a short story contest at a bookstore on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. This formative experience ignited his lifelong adventure through storytelling.

His love for understanding and sharing narratives blossomed at the University of Rochester, where he earned degrees in Political Science and Film Studies.  His professional adventure began by delving into the world of entertainment journalism as an intern and writer for Moving Pictures Magazine in London. Ben transitioned to production, working on TV commercials and some of the most iconic hip-hop music videos of the 1990s before finding his true calling in documentary filmmaking and unscripted television.

As an award-winning producer, director, and showrunner, Ben has gained a reputation for crafting authentic, impactful programming that delves deep into diverse subjects. His storytelling has explored topics ranging from extreme body modification and club drugs to railroads, the New York City water system, antique picking, a level one trauma center, paramedics, tattoo artists, and the iconic Ringling Brothers Circus.

Ben’s notable credits include hit shows like Undercover Boss, Miami Ink, and American Pickers—the latter of which he supervised for eight years. He has developed and produced innovative formats for networks such as Discovery, A&E, and CNBC, and created branded corporate documentaries for Feld Entertainment. Along the way, he has become an expert in developing on-camera talent, fostering creative teams, and designing efficient workflows.

A lifelong New Yorker, Ben lives in Manhattan with his wife, two daughters, and their rescue puppy. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, and rooting for the Knicks and Yankees.
